How to Prepare for Your First RAD Ballet Exam
Everything parents and students need to know to feel confident, calm, and prepared on exam day.
Taking your first ballet exam can feel like a big step, but with the right support and preparation, it can be a truly positive experience. At the Elite Dancers Academy, we’re proud to offer Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) exam preparation classes at all of our locations in Wimbledon, Southfields, Chiswick, and Streatham, and we’ve maintained a 100% pass rate for over 12 years.
Whether your child is working towards Pre-Primary or Grade 8, our aim is to build confidence, develop technique, and nurture a lifelong love of ballet.
A Calm Mind and a Clear Plan
One of the best things a dancer can do on exam day is to arrive feeling calm and focused. Trust the preparation. We would never enter a student for their RAD exam unless we were confident they were ready.
It’s also important to remember that not every student in a class will take their exam at the same time. Everyone progresses at their own pace. We encourage our dancers not to compare themselves to others, but to focus on their individual growth and celebrate how far they’ve come.
What to Expect in the Lead-Up
In the run-up to the exam, students attend focused preparation classes designed to refine their technique and build confidence. These sessions support dancers in becoming exam-ready through repetition, corrections, and personalised feedback. Our RAD-qualified teachers are there every step of the way, helping each student feel ready and well-prepared.
Maintaining full attendance in the weeks leading up to the exam is key. The more consistent your training, the sooner you’ll be eligible and confident enough to take part: something we always strive to make possible and pride ourselves on. We often have children join us from other schools who have spent years ‘stuck’ on one grade; this is something we don’t accept at Elite, we keep things moving and balance progression through ballet grades with performance opportunities.
It’s also important to check your emails regularly, as we send out important updates and reminders to keep you informed and prepared ahead of the exam.
Practical Things You Can Do to Help
There are several small but important ways to support your child as they prepare:
- Check the uniform requirements carefully. Dancers must wear the correct RAD regulation uniform, including character kit if required. Being properly dressed allows for accurate practice in every class.
- Practise at home with the music. Teachers will often give music files to help students feel confident with their timing and exercises.
- Bring a notepad to class. Teachers may give specific corrections or reminders – writing them down helps reinforce learning between lessons.
- Pack everything the night before. This avoids stress on the day and helps your child feel organised and calm.
- Arrive one hour before the exam. This allows enough time to warm up and practise with the Principal before entering the studio.

Every Dancer’s Journey is Unique
It’s natural to feel excited or even a little nervous before an exam. But it’s important to remember that the exam is just one part of the journey. Long-term growth, consistency, and enjoyment are what matter most.
At the Elite Dancers Academy, we believe success comes in many forms. Whether it’s mastering a new step, taking an exam, or performing on stage, each achievement builds confidence and character.
