Two of our most popular classes at the Elite Dancers Academy are Jazz and Lyrical dance. Now, when we say Jazz, don’t picture top hats, canes, and jazz hands! Our Jazz is a modern, dynamic form of dance, mostly choreographed to trending music of the moment. It’s a fun, high-energy, non-syllabus class where students can really let loose and enjoy themselves, all while building strength and flexibility. Whether your child is new to dance or has already explored different styles, our Jazz dance classes for teens provide the perfect opportunity to start or continue their journey.
What Jazz Dance?
Jazz dance is a dynamic and versatile style that covers a wide range of movements, from traditional Jazz to more modern interpretations like Commercial Jazz and Fast Jazz. At Elite, our Jazz dance for beginners is designed to keep students energised and engaged. Each session includes exciting routines to trending music that improve physical strength, flexibility, and rhythm, while also allowing for plenty of individual expression.
In areas such as Wimbledon, we offer Jazz dance classes tailored by age group: Mini Jazz, Junior Jazz, and Senior Jazz. This ensures that every dancer receives instruction appropriate for their age and skill level, helping them grow and build a solid foundation in Jazz. This variety allows students to progress naturally through the levels, starting at any age or skill level.
In other areas, like Chiswick, we combine Jazz and Lyrical into a single class on Saturday at ArtsEd, giving students a broader experience and allowing them to enjoy the best of both worlds in one session.
Lyrical Dance: A Form of Jazz, Perfect for Teens
Lyrical dance is a slower, more expressive form of Jazz dance. While it shares the foundations of Jazz and Ballet technique, Lyrical focuses more on storytelling and emotion. Dancers in Lyrical classes use flowing movements to interpret music, creating a connection between the lyrics and their physical expression.
Because Lyrical dance is less focused on technical precision and more on expression, it’s a wonderful style for those who may be new to dance or starting their journey later in childhood. Unlike ballet, which can be more challenging to pick up at an older age (though certainly possible with our guidance!), Lyrical dance allows teens to dive into the emotional side of movement right away.
This style is especially rewarding for older kids, as it encourages them to explore their feelings, tell stories through dance, and express themselves in a supportive and creative environment. It’s an ideal choice for those looking to start their dance journey, even without prior experience.
Why Jazz and Lyrical Are Perfect for Teens
For teens, starting dance at Elite doesn’t require years of prior experience. Our Jazz dance and Lyrical classes are excellent entry points, and students of all levels are welcome. Jazz dance provides a strong foundation, while Lyrical dance allows for personal interpretation and emotional growth.
Lyrical is particularly well-suited for those who may not have the extensive technical training that ballet requires but still want to explore a form of dance that is both challenging and emotionally fulfilling. It’s never too late to begin a dance journey, and at Elite, we offer expert guidance, helping students build confidence, grace, and skill, no matter when they start.
In Chiswick, our Lyrical dance class is followed by Commercial Dance, making for an exciting afternoon of back-to-back activities for students aged 11 and up. With Lyrical dance running from 5:15pm to 6:15pm and Commercial dance from 6:15pm to 7:15pm at Chiswick Town Hall, many students choose to participate in both classes, creating a full and enriching evening of dance.
