One of the most common questions parents ask us is, “What age should my child start ballet?” The honest answer is that there is no single perfect age. Some children are ready to begin as toddlers, while others start much later and still go on to make wonderful progress.
At the Elite Dancers Academy, our ballet pathway has been carefully created to support children at each stage of their development. For our youngest dancers, ballet is not about strict technique or formal training. It is about music, movement, imagination and helping children fall in love with dance.
Our early years ballet classes, including Little Robins and Demi Doves, are 30 minutes long and give children a gentle introduction to a structured ballet class. At this age, technique is hidden within imaginative play. Children learn to listen, copy, move with music, take turns and build confidence in a fun and encouraging environment.

We have created our own syllabus for these early years classes, designed to prepare children for their first Royal Academy of Dance exam class, RAD Pre-Primary Ballet. Children usually begin to show readiness for more structured ballet learning between the ages of 4 and 5. This is when they can often focus for a little longer, follow instructions more independently and begin to understand the shape and discipline of a ballet class.
From there, children can progress through RAD Pre-Primary Ballet, RAD Primary Ballet and then into the graded RAD ballet pathway. We offer children’s ballet classes across Wimbledon, Chiswick, Southfields and Streatham, with classes ranging from toddler ballet through to higher grades, Intermediate Foundation, pointe work and advanced training.
That said, starting early is not the only route. It is never too late to begin ballet. Some children start at 7, 8, 9 or older and find that ballet quickly becomes something they love. With older beginners, the most important qualities are focus and a willingness to learn.
When placing an older child, we work hard to find the right balance. We do not want to put a child in a class that feels too advanced, but we also do not want them in a class where the age profile is too young. The right class is always the one where the child will thrive. Teenagers with little or no ballet experience will often start in RAD Grade 3 Ballet, depending on their ability, confidence and previous dance experience.
For children who need extra support, we also offer private ballet lessons and small group coaching. These can be a brilliant way to build confidence, catch up on technique or prepare for a move into a suitable group class.
So, what age should your child start ballet? If they are young and interested, starting early can be a lovely way to build confidence, musicality and a love of dance. But if they are older, they have not missed the boat. The most important thing is finding the right class, the right environment and a teacher who understands how to help them grow.
